Stay Focused on the Road: How to Avoid Deadly Distractions

By August 24, 2023No Comments

Not texting is a start, but there is a lot more to safe driving. In 2021 there were 3,522 people killed and an estimated additional 362,415 people injured in traffic crashes involving distracted drivers (NHTSA). The bad news: Distracted driving causes thousands of accidents every year, several of them fatal. The good news? If you are driving, accidents are preventable. Distracted drivers come in all shapes and sizes, all makes and models and all ages. Even if you are not one today, you could become one at any moment. This can happen simply by answering your phone or checking the kids in the back seat.

According to a study released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), 80% of collisions and 65% of near collisions involve some type of driver distraction. There are many distractions that can impact how you drive, whether you realize it or not. Things that can distract drivers:

  • Talking on the phone, even with a hands-free device
  • Eating or drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming (yes, there are people who apply makeup or even shave)
  • Reading
  • Adjusting the radio

How can you be safer behind the wheel?

  • Don’t use your phone: This includes texting and talking.
  • Eat before you leave.
  • Know where you are headed and have your GPS already turned on.
  • Make sure your kids are buckled and occupied. Unoccupied children are a huge distraction for drivers.
  • Take breaks often to avoid fatigue. Driving while you are drowsy is just as dangerous as distracted driving.

Watch for other distracted drivers:

Just because you are not distracted does not mean that other drivers are not. Stay in control and remain vigilant. Distracted driving is not just “one of those things” that occur, like a tire blowout or mechanical failure that is not anyone’s fault. It is 100% preventable and by actively avoiding distractions, you will help make the road safer for everyone.
